The entire community is affected when weather related emergencies such as extended heatwaves, flooding and power outages, tornadoes and hurricanes strike. The most vulnerable amongst us are impacted the hardest. But neighbourhoods can be more resilient against weather related emergencies when they have multiple, connected groups and individuals that are prepared ahead of an event.
Goal of the network
Climate Ready Hamilton is a network designed to support its members, who in turn support the people they serve, to be prepared for weather related emergencies. Members of the network contribute their unique expertise toward plans for neighbourhood response to extreme weather.
Vision
Climate Ready Hamilton coordinates and collaborates for the care of most vulnerable neighbours in preparation for extreme weather emergencies. The network increases the capacity of residents to adapt to extreme weather.
CRH: The beginnings
Climate Ready Hamilton is formerly known as Community Resilience to Extreme Weather (CREW). The CREW Hamilton evolved from an Ontario Trillium Seed funded pilot led by Faith & the Common Good and managed by CREW. The pilot, The Lighthouse Project, ran from November 2018 to December 2019 in Brampton, Toronto, and Hamilton. The pilot explored the ways in which networks of social capital might evolve to response to the challenges of climate driven weather extremes and the contributions faith and other groups could make as catalysts or resilience hubs.
In Hamilton, the pilot established a core working group led by a staff member from Environment Hamilton and lead members from Public Health, the Beasley Neighbourhood Association and St. John's Lutheran Church. The CREW Hamilton network focused their work in the Beasley neighbourhood, which is a downtown neighbourhood with many trusted service agencies. However, the network reaches out to, and involves members and organizations
from the many neighbourhoods in Hamilton who all work together to support their communities.
